Utena

The next anime review is on Revoluntionary Girl Utena: The Student Council Saga. Now for those who have never heard of this show here's a little sample: A young girl named Utena Tenjou who wishes to become a prince herself meets Anthy Hiymiyia and ends yp in part of a series of sword duels for control of the Rose Bride (Hiymiyia).
This anime is full of action, romance, and goofy comedy. This is a relaunch of the original series so if you are a new fan or a returning one, this is a great show to watch.

The Fourth Generation of Duel Monsters

I've just watched the first 18 episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal. Now if you are a seasoned duelist or have been following the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise at least since they started airing 5Ds here in the states, then don't watch this show. If you're just starting out and are still learning, watch this show.
This generation is even further into the future within the city of Heartland. Yeah that's right, no more Domino City. The main character is the middle school boy Yuma Tsukumo who is a complete fool. He really has no talent for anything so he is always pushing himself in everything without much success. The same applies for his dueling skills, he has none. Always on the losing end he suddenly unlocks a forbidden door for the promise of power. Instead he is given Astral, a ghost who isn't really a ghost, but is haunting Yuma like Sai from Hikaru no Go. Just like Sai, Astral is an expert in the game the main character plays and is always telling him how to play.
The graphics of this series aren't anything special except for the new breed of monsters, Exceed Monsters, showcased in the show. The storyline is downright poor and overly simple at times as this version is geared toward a younger audience. The first five or so episodes spend half their time explaining the rules of the game for the viewer. Which I wouldn't mind, if I didn't already know how to play. At the end of each episode is a duelist question of the day. This little quiz further helps and new players understand the functions of the different cards and the rules of the game.
I do like the opening and ending song of this series and the new Exceed monsters are very interesting. The new summoning method, conditions, and the limitations of their abilities are interesting and prevent them from being overpowered. As a duelist myself I can appreciate this. I have more fun playing against unique duelists and their own strategies then facing the same super powered monster time and time again.

A Funkadelic Cinderella Story?

Ever knew anyone who was quiet as a child? Always took crap, did the chores for others, and didn't complain a bit? Well, that's Hana, an orphen girl in Mexico who was adopted and treated as an inhouse slave for the sake of a welfare check.
Well, that is until some wierd woman, Machiko, pops out of nowhere driving a moped and snatches Hana from her "happy" little home. Oh, and did I mention that Machiko just escaped from jail? Yeah, she did and is now running from half the Mexican police force.

Machiko to Hatchin (Machiko & Hatchin) is a funky cool little series. So far I've only seen the first two episodes and I am ready to see more. The opening music is great and goes well with the anime's randomness and independent feel. Filled with great banter that would confuse most people and completely lose everyone else Machiko to Hatchin holds a steady paced story that's not too slow or fast.
Things only move fast when Machiko gets violent, and when she's not lazy she is violent, really violent. Hana is the voice of reason solely from being unsure and not knowing what to do with herself. The two of them make a funny pair each balancing the other as the police and Hana'a adoptive father chase them like no tomorrow, each for their own reasons.

I intend to find the rest of the series and continue watching. I want to see what happens and if that adoptive family ever gets what's coming to them. Boy I hope so. Heh, heh.

3D Demons on Motorbikes

So, our latest DVD support package from Funimation was the first six episodes of Blassreiter.

Here's the main plot, for reasons unknown the dead can come back to life as mutated monsters and kill everyone in sight. The XAT (Xenogenesis Assault Team) is the special team formed to fight these creatures. Conspiracies run high further escalating fear and tension with the citizens as a rare few struggle with their mutation for control in order to fight.

Within the near future of Germany the public lives in fear of the Demoniacs (aka Amalgams). The Amalgams are a mystery and are greatly more powerful than a normal human and are featured in 3D animation. This is a nice touch as they move in quite inhumanly. The show is a good mix of 2D and 3D animation with neither over shadowing the other.

The story moves at a good pace. The slowest is during the first episode, but that's only by compairison of the other episodes. This is not a completly action based anime. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of action. The story is well writen, just when you think you know what direction the story is set in going, it changes. With loads of personal and emotional elements Blassreiter just pulls the viewer in by showing the many faces of humans in all their glory, strief, and dispair.

Overall, this is a must buy. Don't just watch it, buy it. If you're the type who cannot handle fast action and emotional tension, this title is not for you.

Trailer: http://funimation.com/blassreiter/
